Elena Guadiana Segovia
Elena Guadiana Segovia is a Mexican-American mixed-media artist based in Indianapolis, Indiana. Her preferred medium is ceramics, though she also works with textiles, acrylic paint, and fashion design. Her recent work explores the mistreatment of Queer/AFAB Latine people through religious misconduct rooted in Catholicism. Drawing from her own experiences growing up in a traditional, Catholic Mexican immigrant household, Elena examines the ways religious and cultural expectations can contribute to feelings of marginalization in both private and public life. Elena also considers the complex relationship between Catholicism and Mexican identity, acknowledging that while Catholicism is deeply embedded in Mexican culture, Indigenous communities were historically subjected to violence, forced conversion, and cultural erasure by Spanish colonizers. Through her work, Elena confronts the macabre histories that have shaped her lineage and explores how those histories continue to influence contemporary Latine experiences. By acknowledging harmful practices and generational wounds within Latine culture, Elena believes we can begin to create space for healing and transformation. Her work has been presented at Indianapolis art spaces and institutions including Storage Space, Celestial Collective, Chromatic, and the Eiteljorg Museum. Elena continues to use her practice to uplift and advocate for women, immigrants, and the LGBTQ+ community.
